Rajneeti

Sorry for not being able to update the review last night. Internet was down at my place.

Cast: Ranbeer Kapoor, Nana Patekar, Katrina Kaif, Arjun Rampal, Ajay Devgan, Manoj Bajpayee
Music: Wayne Sharpe
Director: Prakash K Jha
Producer: Prakash K Jha, Ronnie Screwvala
Genre: Drama
Result: More politics.... Less votes!!

Basic Plot:
Modern day Mahabharath incorporated with God Father and present(Fictional though!) day politics.

Details:
Director Prakash Jha with few serious & hard hitting movies like Mrutyu Dand, Gangaajal, Apaharan in his kitty, tried his best to make a movie as bold as Bihar politics which he is very familiar with. Having tried his hand in politics in 2 LokSabha elections, showed much interest in exposing the darkest version of politics. In the process he used Mahabharath, best political drama ever in human history(as per me) as a basic plot. War between brothers, great friendship between Karna and Duryodhana, Karna's birth, Pandu Raj, helpless and bedridden Dhrutaraashtra, Lucky and heroic Arjun, His mentor Lord Krishna and most importantly Bhagavadgita. Creates same environment(minus అరణ్య వాసం and అజ్ఞాత వాసం). What follows is a heavy bloodshed and political drama. Nana Patekar as Brij Gopal in Lord Krishna's role says 'राजनीति में सही या गलत नहीं होते। बस हर काम का कुछ मकसद होते।'। This dialogue sums up the whole thing. Nothing is good or bad. No one is good and no one is bad. What matters is power and everybody works towards that without giving a damn to humanity or sentiments. All actors got meaty roles and got enough chance to show their acting skills. There are as many love making scenes as the number of lead(read as important) ladies in the movie and none of them are convincing. But those scenes play important role in story line. First 1 hour puts the viewer in confusion because director takes time to introduce all characters. After that it takes into the main plot and the drama that follows. Total movie goes in Pandava's perspective which in not convincing. This screenplay technique was used in Mahabhatha too, in order to make them heroes.

Performances:
All actors performed well. Naseeruddin Shah in his very brief role and Nana Patekar with his subtle performance stands tall. Ranbeer Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Manoj Bajpayee are decent. Arjun Rampal's role can give him much needed boost. There is one foreign girl(Forgot the name :() acted as Ranbir's love interest. She did well too. Ajay Devgan performed well but looks like he is misplaced. Role of Karna did not suit him well.

Technical Departments:
To start with, background score and cinematography are flawless. Adds lot of value to the movie. Only one song that too comes as a background version and serves the purpose properly. UTV motion pictures is a big production company. They have a good reputation for making movies in uncompromising manner and they prove it yet again. Director Prakash jha succeeded in combining Mahabharath, God Father and modern day politics but that's not enough. Pace of the movie is big hurdle. Length of the movie is adequate considering the number of characters and plots in the movie.

Conclusion:
Personally I am not totally satisfied with this movie, not even disappointed. This is not totally engaging, gripping, entertaining,
thought provoking or commercial / art cinema. It has a bold theme, some nice scenes and honest performances. Might be a grosser at box office due to big star cast, huge advertising, grand extravaganza but
could not sustain my attention for 3 hours. Better screenplay would have done wonders.

My Rating: 2.75 / 5
